Audition
Audition

An audience member joins two players on stage.  They are acting as a panel auditioning an actor for a part in a play.  The panel sits in chairs.

Another players enters the scene as the last actor auditioning of the day.  The auditioning actor introduces themselves, the play from which the monologue is taken and begins the monologue.   After a few moments the panel interrupts the monologue.  The panel offers advice about what they'd like to see and the monologue is repeated or continued.

Notes
  • The auditioning actor should start with solid acting to allow it to evolve.  If it starts out as fakey 'big' acting there is no place for it to go.
  • The Panel can reassure the actor that they like what he or she is doing.   The relationship is constructive not confrontational.
  • The Players may have to 'help' the audience volunteer with prompts (for example, "This part requires an actor with a certain quality....what would you call it?")
  • This game can also be played as an improv exercise for the classroom.

  • I learned this game from Diane Rachel when we played it onstage at BATS Improv.
Now that you know about it, who can you with?
